Helping People Stay Informed When Information Mattered Most

Corinfo was an Android app I developed during the COVID-19 pandemic to make reliable health information easier to access — particularly for people in Bangladesh.

At a time when COVID-19 statistics, safety guidelines, and emergency information were scattered across different websites and sources, Corinfo brought the most important information together in one simple, easy-to-use app.

Users could check live COVID-19 statistics from around the world, see Bangladesh-specific updates at a glance, explore statistics for 190+ countries, read WHO guidance, access prevention guides, and quickly call emergency helplines.

Project Status: Archived
Corinfo is no longer actively distributed. The application was created specifically to address the needs of the COVID-19 pandemic and was eventually retired as the pandemic came to an end and the need for a dedicated COVID-19 tracking app declined.

During the pandemic, Google had restrictions around publishing COVID-19-related applications on the Play Store, which meant Corinfo could not be distributed through Google Play at the time.

Instead, the application was made available for direct download through this website, allowing users to install and use it without relying on the Play Store.

What the App Offered

Corinfo was designed to be more than just a statistics dashboard. It aimed to give users practical information they could actually use.

  • Live COVID-19 Statistics — View worldwide cases, recoveries, and deaths.
  • Bangladesh Updates — See local COVID-19 statistics directly on the home screen.
  • 190+ Countries — Search and browse COVID-19 statistics by country.
  • WHO Information — Access official WHO information directly inside the app.
  • Prevention Guides — Read downloadable guides covering masks, sanitizers, hand hygiene, quarantine, isolation, and environmental safety.
  • Emergency Helplines — Quickly access important Bangladesh helpline numbers including 333, 10655, and 16263.
  • Update Notifications — Automatically detect when a newer version of the app was available.
  • Simple Navigation — A side navigation drawer made it easy to move between different sections.

The challenge

The pandemic created a unique problem: there was a huge amount of information, but finding the right information quickly wasn’t always easy.

News was coming from countless sources, statistics were changing constantly, misinformation was widespread, and important health guidance could be difficult to find.

The goal was to build something that would work for everyone — from experienced smartphone users to people who weren’t particularly comfortable with technology.

Some of the biggest challenges included:

Keeping Live Data Reliable

COVID-19 statistics were constantly changing, so the app needed to communicate with remote APIs regularly. Network failures, slow connections, and API errors had to be handled without making the app feel broken.

Putting Bangladesh First

Since the app was particularly aimed at Bangladeshi users, local statistics needed to be immediately visible rather than hidden behind a search or multiple screens.

Making Important Information Available Offline

Prevention guides needed to remain useful even when users had slow or unreliable internet connections. This meant making essential PDF resources available directly within the app.

Keeping the Interface Simple

The app contained a lot of information, but it couldn’t feel overwhelming. The interface had to remain straightforward and easy to navigate.

Handling Rapid Changes

During the pandemic, information and guidelines could change quickly. The app therefore needed a lightweight mechanism to detect new versions and notify users when an update was available.

The approach

I focused on one principle throughout the project:

Get the right information to the user with as few taps as possible.

Reliable API Communication

I used Volley for network communication and implemented retry handling to make API requests more resilient on slow or unreliable connections.

Local Information First

Bangladesh’s statistics were prioritized on the home screen so local users could immediately see the information most relevant to them, while worldwide statistics were loaded alongside it.

Fast Country Search

A searchable RecyclerView allowed users to quickly find statistics for more than 190 countries. Users could simply start typing rather than navigating through multiple screens.

WHO Information Inside the App

WHO resources were integrated using WebView, allowing users to access official information without having to leave the application.

Built-In Prevention Guides

Important prevention resources were bundled with the application as PDF documents. This allowed users to access essential guidance without depending on a separate PDF reader or an active internet connection.

One-Tap Emergency Access

Important Bangladesh emergency helplines were placed just a tap away, launching the phone dialer directly when users needed assistance.

Lightweight Update System

A simple version-checking mechanism compared the installed app version with the latest available version and notified users when an update was available.

The outcome

Although Corinfo could not be distributed through Google Play due to the COVID-19 app publishing restrictions in place at the time, the application was made available through this website and reached users during the height of the pandemic.

More importantly, it was an opportunity to build something with a clear real-world purpose at a time when accurate information could genuinely make a difference.

The project allowed me to:

  • Build a complete production Android application around a real-world problem.
  • Make the application available to users through an alternative distribution channel.
  • Work with real-time REST APIs and constantly changing data.
  • Design an experience for a broad, non-technical audience.
  • Implement API error handling and network resilience.
  • Integrate WebView and in-app PDF resources.
  • Build country search and filtering for a large dataset.
  • Implement an in-app update detection system.
  • Create a fast-access emergency helpline feature.
  • Deliver a purposeful product under significant time pressure.
