EMAS — IoT bee hive management system

Website and Android app for an IoT-based bee hive management system.

Android EMAS

EMAS is a mobile application designed to make stingless bee farming easier, more organized, and more data-driven.

Built for stingless bee farmers, the app brings everyday hive management into one simple place. Farmers can register their hives, keep track of hive conditions, record honey harvests, and monitor how their colonies change over time — all from their smartphone.

The app works for both traditional farms where farmers enter information manually and modern farms where connected hives can automatically provide information about hive conditions.

Whether managing a single hive as a hobby or running a larger farming operation, EMAS helps farmers keep their records organized and understand what is happening across their colonies.

What Makes EMAS Useful?

  • Manage multiple hives from one place
  • Keep a detailed record of each hive and its location
  • Add photos to help identify and document hives
  • Support for 23+ species of stingless bees
  • Monitor important hive conditions
  • Record honey harvests and production details
  • View historical information and farming trends through easy-to-understand charts
  • Receive information automatically from connected hives
  • Manage different farms and hive locations
  • Choose a subscription plan based on the number of hives being managed

The challenge

Stingless bee farming is becoming increasingly popular across Malaysia and Southeast Asia. However, many farmers still depend on paper notebooks or spreadsheets to keep track of their hives and harvests.

As the number of hives grows, managing all this information becomes difficult. Important changes in hive conditions can easily be missed, harvest records can become scattered, and comparing the performance of different colonies over time can be challenging.

The goal was to create a simple digital companion for stingless bee farmers — something useful for both beginners and larger farms without making farming feel complicated.

The approach

EMAS brings the most important parts of hive management together in one easy-to-use mobile experience.

Farmers can create a digital record for every hive, including its location, photos, species, and current condition. They can then continue adding observations and harvest information as the colony develops.

For farms using connected hives, EMAS can also receive information automatically, reducing the need for farmers to constantly collect and enter measurements themselves.

One of the most useful parts of the app is its visual history. Instead of looking through pages of numbers, farmers can see changes and trends through simple charts. This makes it easier to understand colony development, identify unusual changes, and review harvesting performance over time.

The app was also designed to grow with the farmer. A small hobbyist can start with a limited number of hives, while larger farms can manage many more through the available subscription plans.

The outcome

EMAS transformed hive management from scattered records into a centralized digital farming experience.

Farmers can now keep the history of each colony in one place — from registering a new hive and recording its location to monitoring its condition and documenting every harvest.

The combination of manual management and connected hives also allows EMAS to serve different types of farmers without requiring them to change the way they use the app.

Most importantly, the app turns everyday farming information into something farmers can easily understand and use to make better decisions about their colonies, harvesting, pest management, and future expansion.

EMAS was delivered as a production-ready mobile application under the MyTradeBee / Metatechne Enterprise brand.
